The Art
Mixology is the art and science of creating cocktails. It has its roots in the early 19th century, when the first cocktails were created in America. The word “cocktail” was first recorded in a newspaper in 1806, and referred to a mix of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters.​ Over time, mixology evolved and new ingredients and techniques were introduced, leading to the creation of an array of delicious and innovative cocktails. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the rise of cocktail culture was fuelled by the invention of new ingredients and the popularity of social clubs and speakeasies. Mixology reached new heights in the mid-20th century with the advent of tiki culture and the popularity of exotic tropical drinks. Today, mixology is a global phenomenon, with bartenders and mixologists constantly pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation. Some of the most famous mixologists in history include Jerry Thomas, known as the “father of American mixology,” and Trader Vic, who popularized tiki culture and is credited with creating the Mai Tai. Today, mixology is a respected profession, with many bartenders and mixologists honing their skills and perfecting their craft.
